October 14, 2026

Project Summary

ROADKING manufactured two 40 ton 3 axle flatbed semi trailers for a steel and construction materials supplier based in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

The trailers will transport steel plates, H-beams, reinforcing bars, steel pipes and other construction materials from Dar es Salaam to project sites in Mwanza, Arusha and other inland regions.

Both units have completed production and final inspection. Shipment to Dar es Salaam Port is currently in progress.

Semi Trailers Stacked for Transport and Delivery

Customer Background

The customer is a local steel and building materials supplier serving construction sites, road and bridge projects, and industrial customers across Tanzania.

Its products arrive through Dar es Salaam Port before being distributed to inland destinations. Typical cargo includes:

  • Steel plates
  • H-beams and structural steel
  • Reinforcing bars
  • Steel pipes
  • Construction materials
  • Steel coils carried with suitable support frames

The company required two durable flatbed semi trailers for daily cargo loads of approximately 35 to 38 tons. A 40 ton rated configuration was selected to provide an appropriate operating margin within the approved vehicle and route limits.

Main Transport Challenges

Heavy Steel Loads

Steel plates, beams and reinforcing bars create concentrated loads on the trailer platform. The customer was concerned that an insufficient frame specification could lead to bending, weld fatigue or structural cracking during repeated transport.

The trailer therefore needed a reinforced main frame designed for regular heavy-duty steel and construction material delivery.

Mixed Road Conditions in Tanzania

The trailers will operate on major highways as well as regional roads and access routes leading to construction sites.

Some inland sections contain sharp bends, uneven surfaces and unpaved areas. The customer therefore preferred a mechanical suspension system that could provide reliable load support without creating complicated local maintenance requirements.

Cargo Movement on the Platform

Steel products can slide during braking, cornering or travel over uneven roads. The customer required a checker-plate platform and multiple heavy-duty lashing points around the deck.

These features allow operators to secure beams, plates and other materials using appropriate chains, straps and cargo-control equipment.

Local Parts and Maintenance

The customer wanted commonly serviceable running-gear components that Tanzanian workshops could inspect and repair.

For this reason, the trailers were configured with three 13 ton American-type axles, mechanical suspension and standard heavy-vehicle braking components.

Customised ROADKING Solution

40 Ton Rated Flatbed Configuration

The two trailers were configured for a rated payload of 40 tons, matching the customer’s regular 35 to 38 ton steel transport requirement.

Actual road loading must remain within the approved gross vehicle weight, axle-load distribution and Tanzanian route requirements.

Three 13 Ton American Type Axles

Each trailer is equipped with three 13 ton American-type axles.

This configuration supports heavy-duty operation while using a component type familiar to many commercial vehicle workshops. The customer can more easily identify compatible brake linings, wheel-end parts and other common service components.

Heavy Duty Mechanical Suspension

The customer selected mechanical suspension instead of air suspension.

Its straightforward structure is suitable for heavy loads and mixed road conditions. It also simplifies routine inspection and repair in areas where specialised air-suspension service may not be readily available.

Steel Transport Platform

The flatbed uses a checker-plate deck to provide a durable working surface and additional grip during loading.

Multiple lashing rings are arranged around the platform for securing steel plates, structural beams, reinforcing bars and construction materials.

Steel coils must be transported with suitable coil supports, chocks and a cargo-securement plan designed for the actual coil weight and dimensions.

Braking and Safety Components

The trailers are fitted with a dual-line pneumatic braking system and an emergency relay valve.

LED rear lamps, mudguards and the required electrical connections were installed and checked before shipment.

Customer Specified Blue Finish

Both trailers were finished in the customer’s selected blue colour. Powder coating and protective surface treatment were applied to improve corrosion resistance during coastal and inland operation.

Project Implementation

Transport Requirement Review

ROADKING reviewed the customer’s cargo types, normal loading weight, delivery routes, tractor compatibility and local maintenance conditions.

The customer confirmed that the trailers would mainly transport long steel products and construction materials between Dar es Salaam and inland project locations.

Configuration Confirmation

The final configuration included:

  • 13 metre platform length
  • 2.5 metre overall width
  • 40 ton rated payload
  • Three 13 ton American-type axles
  • Mechanical suspension
  • Twelve 12R22.5 tubeless tires
  • Checker-plate platform
  • Multiple cargo lashing rings
  • Dual-line pneumatic braking
  • Blue exterior finish

The kingpin height, electrical connections and braking interface were checked against the intended tractor configuration before production.

Frame Production and Welding

The main frame and platform structure were manufactured according to the customer-confirmed technical drawing.

During production, the team checked frame alignment, principal steel sections, welding positions and mounting points. Particular attention was given to the main load-bearing structure and the areas around the suspension brackets.
