Five 4 Axle Lowbed Semi Trailers Shipped to Kenya
September 21, 2026
Project Summary
ROADKING completed production and shipment of five heavy duty 4 axle lowbed semi trailers for a Kenyan heavy-haul transport company. The trailers were configured for excavators, bulldozers, loaders, road rollers and other large equipment moving between ports, industrial areas, construction sites and mining locations in Kenya.
The final design combined four 16 ton rated axles, a reinforced high-strength steel frame, heavy duty mechanical suspension, mechanical spring ramps and a 2,500 mm overall width. The specification focused on structural durability, practical loading and easier maintenance under demanding road and job-site conditions.

Customer Background
The customer is an established Kenyan heavy-haul transport company. Its operations cover Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, Nakuru, Eldoret and surrounding industrial and project areas. The company manages a fleet of approximately 50 to 80 tractors and lowbed trailers for construction, mining, power and industrial logistics.
Typical cargo includes excavators, bulldozers, wheel loaders, road rollers, generator sets, steel structures and mining equipment. Common operating routes include Mombasa to Nairobi, Nairobi to Nakuru and Eldoret, and equipment transfers between industrial zones, mines and construction sites.
The customer’s older lowbed trailers had become less reliable on rough roads and unpaved sites. Frequent repairs affected fleet availability, while insufficient frame durability created concern during repeated heavy-equipment transport. The purchasing team therefore assessed frame strength, axle configuration, suspension reliability, ramp operation, parts support, delivery terms and payment conditions before approving the order.
Project Challenges
Repeated Heavy Equipment Transport
The trailers needed to handle concentrated loads from tracked and wheeled machinery. The customer required a structure that could resist deformation under repeated loading, unloading and long-distance transport. Component ratings also had to provide an appropriate engineering reserve for the approved operating configuration.
Rough Roads and Job Site Conditions
The fleet operates on paved highways as well as uneven access roads, construction sites and mining areas. The suspension and frame therefore needed to tolerate vibration, twisting forces and low-speed manoeuvring without making routine maintenance unnecessarily complex.
Safe and Practical Loading
Tracked equipment must be able to drive onto the platform with controlled ramp movement. The customer also needed a stable deck and sufficient tie-down points to secure different machinery sizes during transport.
Serviceability in Kenya
Downtime directly affects transport schedules. The selected configuration therefore prioritised a straightforward mechanical suspension layout, recognisable service components and a practical spare-parts plan for routine maintenance.

Customised Trailer Solution
Reinforced High Strength Steel Frame
The main load-bearing structure uses Q345 and T700 high-strength steel in accordance with the approved production design. The main beam is 500 mm high, with a 20 mm upper plate, 14 mm web plate and 22 mm lower plate. A 4 mm platform plate provides a durable loading surface for tracked machinery.
This frame specification was selected to improve resistance to bending and local stress during repeated equipment transport. Structural suitability still depends on correct cargo positioning, securement, tractor compatibility and compliance with the approved operating limits.
Four Axle Running Gear
Each trailer is equipped with four 16 ton rated axles. The four-axle arrangement helps distribute load across the running gear and supports stable low-speed operation when carrying large machinery. The axle component rating does not by itself define the legal payload; allowable operating weight depends on the complete vehicle combination, axle spacing, registration documents, route conditions and applicable Kenyan requirements.
Heavy Duty Mechanical Suspension
The trailers use mechanical suspension with reinforced 90 x 16 mm, 10-leaf spring assemblies. This system was selected for its load support, simple structure and familiarity to heavy-vehicle workshops. It is suited to fleets that need practical inspection and repair procedures in regional operations.
Mechanical Spring Ramps
Mechanical spring ramps allow excavators, bulldozers and other self-propelled equipment to move directly onto and off the low platform. The spring-assisted design reduces manual effort while avoiding the additional hydraulic system required by hydraulic ramps.
Heavy Duty Coupling and Support Components
The production configuration includes a JOST kingpin matched to the customer’s tractor specification and JOST 28 ton two-speed landing gear. Steel rims, a steel toolbox, heavy duty tie-down points and powder-coated surfaces complete the operating package.

Project Implementation
Requirement Review
The project began with a review of the customer’s cargo types, tractor compatibility, operating routes, loading method and maintenance priorities. This confirmed the need for a four-axle lowbed platform with a reinforced frame, mechanical suspension and spring-assisted ramps.
Engineering Confirmation
ROADKING confirmed the overall dimensions, beam structure, plate thicknesses, axle ratings, suspension layout, kingpin interface, landing gear and tie-down arrangement before production. The final overall dimensions were set at 13,000 x 2,500 x 1,760 mm.
Production and Quality Checks
During production, the team checked the principal steel sections and plate thicknesses against the approved specification. Frame alignment, welding, axle and suspension installation, ramp operation, landing gear, electrical components and surface finishing were inspected before shipment preparation.
Shipment Preparation
After final inspection, the five completed trailers were prepared for export and shipped to Kenya under the agreed commercial arrangement. Production records and the contracted export documentation were prepared for the shipment.

Compliance and After Sales Support
The five trailers were produced according to the customer-confirmed technical specification for heavy-equipment transport in Kenya. ROADKING supplies the manufacturing and export documents included in the sales contract and can provide technical guidance for assembly, inspection and routine maintenance.
A recommended spare-parts list can be matched to the final component brands and models. Typical service items include brake components, spring pins and bushes, wheel-end parts, lamps, electrical connectors, landing-gear parts and ramp-spring components. The mechanical suspension and widely serviceable component layout help local workshops perform routine maintenance more efficiently.
For road operation, the customer or importer must register the trailers and operate them within the axle-load, route, cargo-securement and permit requirements that apply to the final tractor-trailer combination and each movement in Kenya.

Project Outcome
ROADKING completed and shipped all five 4 axle lowbed semi trailers with the confirmed heavy duty configuration. The finished units combine a reinforced high-strength steel frame, four 16 ton rated axles, mechanical suspension, mechanical spring ramps and JOST coupling and support components.
The project demonstrates how a lowbed trailer specification can be matched to a customer’s machinery types, road conditions, tractor fleet and maintenance priorities without relying on a generic standard configuration.

Frequently Asked Questions
What Equipment Can These Lowbed Trailers Carry
They are configured for excavators, bulldozers, loaders, road rollers, generator sets, steel structures and mining equipment. Before loading, the operator should verify the machine’s actual weight, dimensions, centre of gravity and securement requirements against the approved trailer and route limits.
Why Use Four Axles on a Lowbed Semi Trailer
A four-axle arrangement distributes load across more axle positions and can improve stability for heavy-equipment transport. Legal operating weight still depends on the complete vehicle combination, axle spacing, registration and route requirements.
How Is Equipment Loaded onto the Trailer
Mechanical spring ramps allow suitable tracked and wheeled machines to drive onto the low platform. Operators must use safe loading procedures and secure the cargo at the specified tie-down points before travel.
Can ROADKING Supply Spare Parts
Yes. ROADKING can prepare a spare-parts recommendation based on the installed axles, suspension, landing gear, kingpin, braking and electrical components. Supply scope and warranty support follow the sales contract.
Can the Specification Be Customised for Other Projects
Yes. Dimensions, axle arrangement, suspension, tires, ramps, tie-down points and other components can be configured according to the cargo, tractor, route and local approval requirements of a new project.
Request a Lowbed Trailer Configuration
